Single Pole, Single Throw
The single pole, single throw (SPST) switch has one input and one output, directly connecting the input to the output. Its primary function is to control the circuit by toggling it ON or OFF. When the switch is in the closed position, it completes the circuit and turns it ON. When the switch is open, the circuit is interrupted and turned OFF. Examples of SPST switches include those used in 25kV railway DC power systems and domestic lamp switches.
This switch features two types of connections: normally open (NO) and common (C). When the switch is activated, the circuit closes, allowing current to flow from the common (C) terminal to the normally open (NO) terminal. When the switch is deactivated, the circuit opens, stopping the flow of current. Essentially, this switch operates as a simple on/off mechanism. Pressing the switch button connects the internal contacts, completing the circuit and allowing current to flow. For instance, SPST switches are commonly used to control room lighting. When the switch is OFF, the circuit is interrupted, turning the light off. When the switch is ON, the circuit is completed, turning the light on.

Single Pole, Double Throw Switch
The single pole, double throw (SPDT) switch enables the control of two separate circuits using a single common input. This type of switch can be operated either manually or through an automatic mechanism, such as an electromagnetic coil. A practical example of a single pole, double throw switch can be found in the output terminal relays of ACS 550 or 800 VFDs. In this setup, the relay switch functions as one input with two distinct outputs.
The SPDT (Single Pole Double Throw) switch functions as an ON/OFF switch that either connects or disconnects two terminals. When the switch is in the closed position, it connects the terminals, allowing current to flow between them. Conversely, when the switch is open, the terminals are disconnected, preventing current flow. SPDT switches are classified into two types based on their operation: BBM (Break Before Make) switches and MBB (Make Before Break) switches.

Break Before Make (BBM) Type Switch
Transfer switches are designed to quickly switch electrical power sources. An open transition, also known as a break-before-make transfer, involves the transfer switch disconnecting from one power source before connecting to another. During this transition, no power is supplied to the downstream load.
A BBM (Break Before Make) SPDT switch is typically connected to the closed throw circuit and disconnected from the open throw circuit by default. When the BBM switch is actuated, it first disconnects from the closed circuit and then connects to the open circuit.
In devices with the BBM function, the input control logic alters the signal path so that the link between two multiplexed pathways is never electrically connected at the same time. This isolation is crucial in multiplexed applications to prevent signal distortion when transferring a signal from one channel to another.

Make Before Break (MBB) Type Switch
Another type of transition is the make-before-break (MBB) switch, which temporarily bridges two positions. In this configuration, the second connection is established before the first connection is broken. The switch blade, controlled by a selector switch, connects to the first power source and then switches to the second position to load the electrical contact. T-shaped and V-shaped blades are commonly used for this type of switch.
In an MBB SPDT switch, the pole is connected to the normally closed (NC) throw circuit by default and disconnected from the normally open (NO) throw circuit. When the MBB switch is activated, it first connects to the normally open circuit before disconnecting from the normally closed circuit.
The MBB feature ensures that when the signal path is altered by the input control logic, the connection between two multiplexed paths is never electrically severed. This prevents situations where a high impedance output could occur, which is crucial when a feedback node requires a continuous load.

Double Pole, Single Throw
The Double Pole Single Throw (DPST) switch features two inputs and two outputs, with each input corresponding to one output. Each terminal on this switch can be set to either ON or OFF. In this context, "pole" refers to the number of circuits controlled by the switch, while "throw" denotes the switch's position. Essentially, a double pole switch manages two independent circuits with a single throw mechanism that controls both circuits simultaneously.

A DPST (Double Pole Single Throw) switch is designed to control two distinct circuits simultaneously, with a single actuator such as a push button or toggle. In this switch, both circuits are either turned ON or OFF together. It features four terminals: two for inputs and two for outputs.

Analysis of Common Pushbutton Switch Structures

Push Button Switch

The push button switch is a device that turns on or off the power circuit by pressing the push part with fingers. The structure of the push button switch is divided into three parts: push unit, installation base and contacts module. If it's an illuminated push button switch, it also includes light box components.
The push unit has a button part. When the operator presses the button part, it will move a certain distance towards the contact modules, which is often called the travel distance. And triggers the spring pieces or push rod of the contacts to open or close the contact between two contacts.
The mounting base is used to mount the push button switch to the mounting plate and connect the push unit and the contacts module. The installation and fixation of the push button switch requires a flat plate, which is called the installation plate by the engineer. It can be an independent plate or the shell of the installed equipment. The material of the plate includes metal, plastic or other materials. The surface of the board needs to be flat and the thickness is between 1-8mm.
There are three types mounting base according to the different fixation methods: two auxiliary screws fix, nuts fix and clips fix. Different application fields, engineers choose the appropriate installation mode when selecting models. The materials of mounting base: metal and plastic. The type with two auxiliary screws who oblique direction installation is most firmly.
Two auxiliary screws are fixed obliquely, which has the advantage of firm installation and not easy to loosen. Shortcoming is installation trouble, time-consuming. The advantages of nut rotation fixation are convenient and fast, and the shortcoming is that it is easy to loosen on the vibrating equipment. Buckle fixation is a new way of installation, in recent years. It is easy to install and firm. However, due to make and manufacturing process, there are only plastic base at present, which is not suitable for equipment with serious oil pollution or high temperature.

Emergency Stop Switch

When the equipment is in a dangerous state, in order to ensure the safety of people life and equipment, people need a electrical switch that can cut off the power supply quickly and reliably, and make the equipment stop work, which is the emergency stop switch. The emergency stop switch is similar to the push button switch, except that its touch part is replaced by a mushroom shaped actuator with a larger diameter, such as, 60mm, and the color of mushroom actuator is red. The surface of mushroom actuator is printed with an obvious arrow or "emergency stop" character. According to the classification of safety control circuit in EU, the emergency stop switch can reach level 3-4.

Selector Switch

When it is necessary to control the multi position state circuit, the push button switch can't meet the needs, and the selector switch is needed to control the circuit. The selector switch is a kind of switch apparatus which can be used for two or more circuit power supplies or load change-over. The selector switch is composed of three parts: operation part, mounting base and contacts module. The mounting base and contacts module are the same as push button switch, which is not described here. The following describes the operating components of the selector switch.
The selector switch can be divided into two positions and three positions selector switches according to the number of rotating gears, which can be return type or action hold type. The push button switch is to press the button part by fingers to open or close the contact. The selector switch drives the contact to open or close by turning the handle. The selector switch can be selected with lamp or without lamp, and the light of selector switch with lamp can be seen from the transparent handle.

Key Switch

The key switch is also a kind of selector switch, only the operating handle of the selector switch is replaced with a key. The key switch requires the operator to have a matching key in his hand to operate the equipment, and strengthens the authority management of the operation action. Key switch, a key can operate multiple key switches, or a key can only operate a specified key switch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between a rocker switch and a regular switch?

A: With toggle switches, changing the switch position usually involves moving a small lever up or down, where it clicks into place. Rockers are not designed to move around in their housing this way. Instead, they just tilt back and forth around a central pivot point.

Q: Why are rocker switches better?

A: Rocker switches are ideal for simple on/off functions and are often used for applications that require clear visual and tactile feedback. Toggle switches offer more versatility, supporting both on/off and multi-position switching, making them suitable for various control applications.

Q: Are rocker switches more expensive?

A: Whilst the cost of electricity is the same, no matter whether you use toggles or rockers, the price of the actual switch can vary. Toggle switches tend to be more expensive than rocker switches.

Q: How long do rocker switches last?

A: The lifespan of a rocker switch can vary depending on the quality of the switch and how often it is used. However, a well-made rocker switch can last for many years with proper use and maintenance.

Q: How do I know if my rocker switch is working?

A: Press the switch either way to see if there is power there. Check both posts a) If there is power at both posts then check the wire running to the motor for damage and loose connections. b) If there is no power at one or both posts then the solenoid needs to be replaced.

Q: What is the principle of rocker switch?

A: Rocker switches operate on the all-or-nothing principle and, as the name suggests, use a rocker mechanism. Spring force enables the rocker to stay in a certain position or to return to its initial one. Rocker switches correspond to the definition of switch.

Q: Can you replace a light switch with a rocker switch?

A: Replacing toggle switches with rocker-panel switches is an easy and inexpensive visual upgrade with an added benefit. Rocker switches are much easier to use for people who suffer from arthritis.

Q: Why would you use a rocker switch?
