Basic Knowledge of Fuses

    A fuse is a safety element used for circuit protection and is widely used in various electrical and electronic devices. Its main function is to cut off the circuit by fusing itself when the current is overloaded or short-circuited, thereby protecting electrical equipment from damage.

 

Working principle of fuse
    A fuse usually consists of a wire or metal wire, the material and diameter of which are precisely designed to ensure that it will melt when the current is too large. When the current exceeds the rated current of the fuse, the wire will quickly heat up and melt due to the thermal effect, disconnecting the circuit and preventing electrical equipment from being damaged due to excessive current.

 

Structure of fuse
    A fuse generally includes a conductive metal wire, an insulating shell and a terminal. The conductive metal wire is usually made of materials such as lead, copper, and nickel. It is the core part of the fuse and is responsible for conductivity. The insulating shell is used to wrap the wire to prevent accidental contact and keep it safe. The terminal is used to connect to the circuit, usually made of metal, to guide the current into the wire.

 

Types of fuses
    Low-voltage fuse: suitable for low-voltage circuits, such as household appliances, lighting equipment, etc.
    High-voltage fuse: used in high-voltage power systems to protect large equipment and power lines.
    Automotive fuses: used in automotive circuits, with specialized designs and specifications to suit the power needs of the car.
    Slow-blow and fast-blow fuses: Slow-blow fuses take a long time to blow and are suitable for devices with large current fluctuations; while fast-blow fuses blow in a short time and are suitable for devices with strict current requirements.

 

Rated value of fuses
    Rated current: The maximum current value that the fuse can withstand when it is designed. Exceeding this current will cause the fuse to blow.
    Rated voltage: The maximum voltage at which the fuse can work safely.
    Blowing time: The time it takes for the fuse to blow when the current is overloaded, usually related to the magnitude of the current.

 

Advantages and disadvantages of fuses
    Fuses are simple and reliable, and their working principles are easy to understand. The most important thing is that it can not only provide effective protection for the circuit and prevent equipment damage, but also has low cost. Even after the fuse blows, only the fuse itself needs to be replaced, which is low cost. Once the fuse blows, it needs to be replaced manually and cannot be reused. For continuous slight overloads, the fuse may be easy to blow, and the appropriate specifications need to be selected. Fuses cannot be precisely controlled and sometimes react slowly to current changes.
