Definition and application of IEC connectors

IEC connector definition

IEC connectors are also known as IEC plugs or IEC power connectors. It is a broad class of power connectors used for a variety of purposes following International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards. IEC connectors are not a specific type of connector, but a broad category of different types of electronic and power connectors that comply with IEC standards. These connectors serve many markets, including medical, consumer products (such as white and brown goods), industrial, automotive, transportation, test and measurement, and more.

An important standard for IEC connectors is IEC 60320, which is specified by the International Electrotechnical Commission and is  mainly used for power connections between electrical and electronic equipment. The standard introduces 13 different types of IEC power connectors with two or three conductor variants and different current variants, enabling power to be connected into different types of electrical and electronic equipment.

The IEC power connector is a standard power connector for electronic and electrical equipment. Due to a standard format, ready-made cables are easily available in the market, which allows consumers to purchase ready-made goods at very cheap prices. connector manufacturers are very interested. In addition, a variety of filtration connectors can be provided at low cost to integrate filtration and other functions. Therefore, IEC power connectors are very suitable for many electronic equipment design applications.

IEC common connector types

IEC 60130: Applicable to connectors with frequencies below 3 MHz, usually used for low-frequency signal transmission.
IEC 60169: Radio frequency connector, used for the transmission of radio frequency signals, commonly used in wireless communications and broadcast equipment.
IEC 60320: Appliance Coupler, a widely used power connector standard for connecting power between power cords and equipment.

IEC 60320 defines 13 different types of IEC power connectors with different current and voltage specifications to suit different equipment needs.
IEC 60339: Universal rigid coaxial transmission line and its associated flange connectors for the connection of coaxial cables commonly found in television, radio and communications systems.
IEC 60457: Rigid precision coaxial and related precision connectors for applications requiring high-precision connections, such as measurement and test equipment.
IEC 60498: High-voltage coaxial connectors for nuclear instrumentation, designed to maintain stable electrical connections in high-voltage and radiation environments.

IEC connector applications

Household appliances: IEC power connectors are widely used in various household appliances, such as TVs, stereos, refrigerators, washing machines, etc.
Computers and office equipment: Office equipment such as computers, printers, scanners, etc. often use IEC power connectors for power connections.
Medical equipment: IEC connectors are also often used for power and signal transmission in medical equipment.
Communication systems: Coaxial cable connectors (such as IEC 60339) are used in communication systems to transmit television, radio and Internet signals.
Industrial automation: In industrial automation systems, IEC connectors are used to connect various devices and sensors to achieve data collection and control.
